Beginning in the early 1950s, CBS hired a soft-talking Indianan by the name of Herb Shriner. He would sit on a chair by a small desk and amiably interview celebrity guests. He may have been the first, but he was by no means the last.

The first breakout star in the talk show business was a performer named Jack Paar. Older readers may remember him for his somewhat “off-the-cuff” style, his clever banter with guests and his ability to keep his one-hour show fluid, fast-moving and entertaining.

Paar may have been the “model” for all who followed him, like the multi-talented and always-laughing young Steve Allen. A prolific songwriter, Steve Allen also was very funny as a talk show host, forever giggling out loud along with his guests and also in the silly, but often hilarious, skits that took place on every show which also included his legendary “Man In The Street” interviews with Don Knotts, Tom Poston and others.

And then there was Ernie Kovacs. Often referred to as a creative genius and a man who was way ahead of his time, Kovacs, who was married to Edie Adams, had audiences laughing with him as he performed his often wacky, but inspired, skits and when he interviewed his guests, as well. Sadly, he died prematurely in an automobile accident.

The “king of all talk show hosts” followed Steve Allen to NBC. He was, of course, Johnny Carson. There were many who competed with him, many more who have followed, but none have ever matched his greatness as a talk show host. He had a remarkable ability to connect with his audience, in the studio and at home, that made him immensely popular for about thirty years.

It’s probably fair to say that Carson’s amazing achievement will never be duplicated. He was, and always will be, the greatest talk show host of all time.

OLED or Organic Light Emitting Diodes is currently on the rise particularly for the 21st century. And what’s so great about it is the fact that it brings together the best part of the modern and natural world together.

OLED Television and displays were first heard of in around the 1950′s when A. Bernonose together with his team started a short experiment on the creation of light by passing it in between two semiconductors. The experiment was a complete success and it began its long development. During the 1980s, Dr. Ching T. Wang developed the first real diode for the Kodak Eastman company.

Today OLED is slowly taking over the market. Not only is it being used in the production of televisions, it has also been used in PDAs, Car stereos and wrist watches. In a recent trade convention, several mobile phones were unveiled before the general public that has been noted in using AMOLED or Active Matrix Organic Light Emitting Diodes.

But what’s so great about OLED displays and OLED TVs that it has become a major competition for High Definition TVs and Flatscreen TVs or LCD TVs? The answer is simple. First, OLED displays implicitly do not require any form of backlighting. This means that it does not require the same amount of energy or electricity in order for it to work. Secondly, OLED TVs have a higher color ratio compared to other types of televisions. Reports state that OLED TVs are known to exceed the standard NTSC standards and displays a brilliant 180 degree angle and a > 1.000.000:1 contrast ratio. It’s that powerful. Another advantage of OLED TVs is the fact that it gives off superior quality for color and has a better and wider angle compared to the normal television sets. At 180 degrees, you can see everything from just about anywhere in the living room.

Televisions that support OLED technology not only save electricity and energy but also save space. Unlike flatscreens and HDTVs, OLED TVs are truly slim in nature. This means more space to move around.

Finally, futurists believe that in two to three years, OLED will have experienced massive developments and will most likely be cheaper to what it currently is right now. This would mean cheaper televisions, mobile phones, PDAs and other digital gadgetry.

These are just a few of the things that make OLED, technology and products superior. People who pass the opportunity to try the increased efficiency and superior capabilities of OLED displays are bound to miss out on a truly great opportunity.

One of the challenges faced by those who open a dollar store is how to stay connected to the marketplace. These owners realize they need to know what’s happening in order to build their sales and profits. They realize customer preferences change. The dollar store merchandise that is most in-demand today may not even sell at all tomorrow. They know major retailers are constantly tweaking their format, marketing and merchandising strategies in response to changes in the marketplace.

One of the keys to making the right changes is to clearly understand what is happening in the marketplace. Armed with that knowledge it is much easier to make the right adjustments to keep your business growing. Read on for 6 sources of industry information.

#1) Locally owned dollar stores. That’s right. Owners of those small locally owned dollar stores can be a goldmine of information. They will have suggestions to help you build sales and profits. They will be able to share ideas about the marketplace and the best products to offer. They will know the emerging new hot sellers. Most are happy to share this information when you open a dollar store.

#2) National dollar discount chains. While the big national chains are unlikely to willingly share much specific information with you, they remain a great source of information. Periodically walk through their stores. Note what’s selling while you are there. Look for new products. Examine their end caps for ideas. Check to see if you can find new merchandising and operational practices. But don’t stop there. Read news features and company communications to gain a better understanding of their take on the economy, the marketplace and their shoppers.

#3) General merchandise retailers. Look at other retailers as they modify their store formats. Pay special attention to discounters and retailers that have added dollar formats in their stores. They can be a great source of ideas. While each idea may take a little modification, many will help power your sales and profits to new levels.

#4) Dollar store trade shows. Trade shows are a great source of information. You meet top dollar store suppliers and see their merchandise. You can also attend seminars and demonstrations about leading edge technology and methods. Plan to attend one or two trade shows per year. You will come back with many new, potential suppliers for your store as well.

#5) Dollar store suppliers. Start getting to know suppliers even before you open a dollar store. Research the general merchandise suppliers. But don’t stop there. Examine the specialty merchandise suppliers as well. Develop strong lines of communication. You will find the best suppliers are happy to do everything possible to provide market information to help you build your sales and your profits. After all, your success helps build their success.

#6) Retail and business publications. Subscribe to the better industry publications to keep your finger on the pulse of what is happening. Don’t stop there. Read quality business publications as well. They can provide you with a good overview of the business climate and business in general. You will find sound business practices can be taken and implemented in your business to build profits even higher. To your success when you open a dollar store!

Thousands of miles above the surface of the Earth, television satellites are serenely orbiting our planet at geosynchronous altitude, broadcasting hundreds of different channels to the world below. Inside our living rooms, the TV is so taken for granted that it is easy to forget the miraculous technology that makes it all possible. We don’t need to be able to understand the inert noble gases in plasma screens and the liquid crystals in LCD displays in order to be able to enjoy the pictures they produce. We are able to ignore the incredible distances that signals travel, and the fact that millions of people can receive the same thing at the same time.

One of the most obvious pros of satellite TV is the staggering number of channels it offers. This broad selection gives the power to the viewer, to browse and choose the programs that seem the most interesting, entertaining, and educational to them. Watching TV is a matter of personal tastes, but you can’t choose according to your tastes unless you have a wide variety of options. Local analog connections have never been able to provide more than a few channels, and even cable can’t keep up with satellite.

Another great pros of satellite TV is that it touches every corner of the Earth, so that no matter how rural or remote a viewer is, they can still tilt a satellite dish towards the sky and receive the same benefits as anyone else. Sports fans in eastern Montana can watch the NFL Sunday ticket the same as anyone in urban Houston or Chicago. Our world is ever more connected, and this kind of availability is extremely important to areas that traditionally have been underserved when it comes to technology.

Satellite TV doesn’t just come to you, it also takes you places. Flip through the channels and you have endless choices from imaginary worlds to the Real World, the History Channel or the Today Show, local events and foreign news – even the weather channel is a glimpse around the globe. With a resource this valuable for discovering the universe around you, don’t skimp on a poor service or inferior technology. Open up your world with a satellite package that brings you news from India and sitcoms from the UK, nature shows about Africa and science shows made in Australia. See it all up close and personal, in shimmering detail, with phenomenal high definition coverage. If you stick with local stations, all you will ever get is local news, watered down shows, and overall poor, unexciting selection. With a full satellite package, you have the world at your finger tips.

Academically plasma is often considered as the fourth state of matter. Scientifically extreme heat or powerful electric current can split up atoms of a gas to generate plasma. It is a mixture of charged particles called electrons and ions. Modern technology made it possible to use plasma gas in the manufacturing of television. The screen consists of glass panes with plasma in between. The gas in the plasma state reacts with phosphorus, to create cells or pixels. Each pixel will have three sub pixels, which are of fluorescent lights of red, blue and green. In a chemical reaction, sub pixels emit millions of different colors. Color saturation in the plasma television is attributed to this new technology. There is an element of uniqueness in the form and content of plasma television.

Uniformity in the color brightness and saturation are the core reasons why plasma is considered the best option for large screens. There is no other television to match plasma as far as wider viewing angles are considered. It is therefore the most suitable television for group viewing either in large family gatherings or for commercial purposes. Longevity and cost advantage are other factors that made it a favorite choice of the consumers. In the early stages, plasma television had the inherent problem of burn-in, but now it is completely eliminated thanks to the special techniques adopted. High quality phosphorus gas with suitable anti-burn settings could make modern plasma television free from burn-in problems. Today it is the most environment friendly television in the market.

Periodical up gradation of technology by the manufacturers helped plasma television to retain, if not to enhance its market shares in the recent past. Other than burn-in there was another concern for the consumers. It was the energy consumption. At a time when conservation of energy is a universal issue, consumers are naturally apprehensive about plasma technology. But technology once again helped to overcome this problem too. An example is Panasonic Neo PDP plasma technology. New luminescent material, innovative cell design and advanced drive technology are some of the secrets behind the successful venture of Panasonic. The new product could achieve energy efficiency by reducing transmission losses. Enhanced contrast ratio and 600Hz refresh rates with one touch connectivity makes plasma television a perfect choice for the consumers who will not compromise with quality. This and many more innovative ideas are being incorporated in the plasma technology.

The Fox Network television history has not all been plain sailing. It was launched in October 1986 after the parent company of 20th Century Fox, TCF Holdings, sold 50% of its shares to News Corporation for $250 million in 1985. New Corporation then bought six television stations in various major cities from Metromedia. At this time, the stations that they bought were broadcastings to just 22% of households in the United States.

The network was seen to have a young and slightly irreverent outlook in its programming and was soon broadcasting shows such as ‘Married… with Children’ and ‘The Tracey Ullman Show’. It was not long before ‘The Simpsons’ was born and this went on to be the longest running animated series and situation comedy in the history of U.S. television. Fox Network television history was being made.

‘America’s Most Wanted’ was the next big success story in Fox Network television history and was the first show to make it into the top 50 shows of the week in the all important Nielson ratings. The show is still among the prime time hits. Although Fox was well on its way to being recognised as a top network broadcaster, its ranking with the other big three was still elusive.

This all changed in 1993 when Fox gained the National Football League coverage contract. Until then this had been the rights of CBS, where it had found its home since the 1950s. After just one season of the NFL coverage, Fox had to be considered alongside CBS, ABC and NBC… the big three had become the big four. Around the same time, Fox started to broadcast some soap operas aimed at the younger audience and these were popular from the outset.

Since then, Fox Network television history has given us such shows as ‘Family Guy’, ‘King of the Hill’ and many reality shows such as ‘Joe Millionaire’. Such shows are not popular with everyone and some have knocked the network for broadcasting distasteful viewing. However, the finale of the first series of ‘Joe Millionaire’ was watched by over 40 million people. The figures speak for themselves. Fox has always been an entertainment channel. It has never faired well with news reporting but has found its own niche where it entertains and brightens up the lives of millions of viewers throughout the United States.

In the early days of television, broadcasts and sets only operated in black and white. There were early inventions that were capable of broadcasting in color even before the TV had become a household appliance, however none succeeded. RCA became the first company to make color TV sets widely available. The first color broadcast in North America took place in 1953. The color TV didn’t become the standard in most homes until the sixties however.

The advances in the technology behind television sets have continued to advance. The advent of the flat screen technology began the transition to televisions which could display in higher clarity, but LCD and Plasma screens are now the norm in most homes. The current advancements are in the changing of television broadcasts from an analog to digital format. Additionally, broadcasting in high definition signal is now offered by most major networks, and every satellite and cable provider offers hi-def channels.

Television trivia is often concerning the most popular viewing events. There are many different genres of television, news, sports, reality, dramatic programming and sitcoms, and certain categories consistently attract more viewers than other. The hand down most viewed television broadcast of all time is the first appearance of the Beatles on the Ed Sullivan show. This broadcast, which took place in 1964 when the population of the country was only a fraction of what it is today, attracted over 73 million viewers. The next most watched event was Elvis Presley’s first appearance on that same show, which only attracted 60 million viewers.

After those broadcast there are many other shows which have ranked in the top most viewed broadcasts. The event that is most consistently watched by the most people in the United States is the Super Bowl. Worldwide, this event is not as popular, and on a global scale it is safe to say that matches in the final rounds of the World Cup are viewed by more people than the Super Bowl.

Satellite bandwidth is associated with satellite systems that work on a two way system. The first way is the sending of the signal and the second way is the receiving. This system involves sending and receiving a signal from a satellite that is orbiting the earth over 22,000 plus miles in the area. To help get an image of this orbiting satellite imagine traveling across the United States five and a half times.

This technology is not required for cell phones and is unique to satellite bandwidth. The primary satellite is a satellite that orbits the earth. This is known as the Geosynchronous satellite, which typically orbits the earth over the equator at approximately the same speed as the as the earth’s rotation. This means that the satellite stays in approximately the same spot over the earth throughout its entire orbit as its name implies.

This geosynchronous satellite creates a footprint onto the earth; this footprint is the coverage area of that particular satellite. As a user of satellite internet travels they may find that they need to switch satellites as they move in or out of the footprint of the particular satellites whose satellite Internet signal they are receiving.

The most modern satellites offer a bigger and bigger footprint to the point that some geosynchronous satellites footprints may cover the entire United States, Canada and Mexico making switching satellites less and less necessary, meaning that the user will receive satellite Internet signal from virtually anywhere in the country.

The satellite broadband signal that transmits from the geosynchronous satellite uses a frequency band that is of the electromagnetic spectrum. This signal band is the same frequency that radar detectors use and may in some cases cause distortion of the signal.

In order to send out the signal the geosynchronous satellite uses what is known as a transponder to pick up the signal in the electromagnetic spectrum This satellite also has a receive transponder so that the satellite Internet that picks up the signal coming from the users satellite, sending the signal back to the geosynchronous satellite.

For the satellite Internet signal to travel properly between the geosynchronous satellite and the user satellite the signal that transmits form the users dish must be precisely timed to be received by the geosynchronous satellite. To clarify this imagine a signal traveling from a users dish from Texas to two different satellites, one over Texas and another over Canada, the users signal will be received faster from the satellite over Texas than by the one over Canada, because the users location is closer to the Texas satellite geographically, therefore it is pertinent that the users satellite be set to operate with the Texas satellite to assure the fastest possible signal communication and consequently utilizing the satellite Internet to its best potential for the strongest possible satellite Internet transmission.
